I can’t believe it. I’m a huge Apple fan, I’m a geek, I’ve been waiting and waiting for this spot to air. Sitting with my television set 24-7 because it’s 1983 and there’s no TIVO/DVR or web. Damn, I don’t even have a remote control or cable yet.

Apple’s introducing something big. And so there I am, eyes glued to Superbowl XVIII and here it comes….1984 – the commercial I’ve been waiting for. There’s the Orwellian vibe: in a word, bleak. A factory of robotic misery. Here come the masses, prisoners of propaganda. Are they workers, criminals, or just…bald civilians? That guy on the screen is obviously Big Brother. But wait, here come police in riot gear… a blonde woman in red shorts, running…she’s obviously an athlete. She bursts in, she spins, she throws a sledgehammer into the screen. Fade to white.
Huh?
What were they thinking?
What about the features? What about RAM? What about processing speed? What about the hard drive? I wanted some detail. Why didn’t they tell me what this machine can do for me?
Boy this commercial is never going to make any top ten lists, that’s for sure.
Why didn’t they tell me why I should buy this piece of technology?
Or…did they?
